Kia ora – I’m Keiry, the gardener, forager, dyer, knitter and general maker of The Kindly Dyer.
I started this natural dyeing lark in 2017 for fun; just to indulge my love for making pretty stuff.
Natural dyeing is the intersection of three enduring passions in my life: gardening, science and knitting.

Philosophy
The Kindly Dyer philosophy is to be kind to nature; to respect our natural environment and those we share it with.
Wherever possible dye brews are made with what’s available locally, timing foraging and picking so that birds and bees have first go.
Yarn is dyed in small batches as time and season permits. That is the best way to keep my promise to be kind to the environment, by using plant materials in-season, using and disposing of water carefully.

Yarns for dyeing
I choose to dye only New Zealand grown and milled yarns. This means we can trace the good hands who care for the wool from the farm to your yarn.
The foundation yarn, Palliser Ridge’s Romney lambswool DK from just down the road at Pirinoa is still a firm favourite.
I source fine South Island NZ Merino and a Merino-Arapawa blend from Wild Earth Yarns mill in Christchurch.
